This is just a little post to wish you all a Happy St David’s Day! My heritage spans a number of countries and continents and arguably the one I have the most personal connection to is Wales. I lived primarily in Wales until I was 12, and spent my happiest childhood years learning the language and traditions of the country. I no longer have any family living in Wales, and my knowledge of the language has faded a lot, but I like to think there’s still a streak of Welsh pride in me.
It’s been a running a joke in my family that though I look the least Welsh, I have the deepest ties and largest love for the country and our history there. Perhaps it has something to do with me being the first descendant to grow up in Wales since my great-grandmother (she was uprooted aged 12 as well, except to America rather than London). The Welsh are known for being kind, friendly, musical and outdoorsy – I’d like to think that fits even if I have very few other Welsh signifiers!
If you haven’t been to Wales before then I love bustling, quirky Cardiff (guide here), beautiful sunny Aberystwyth, gorgeous, photogenic Snowdonia, historical, cute Conwy, and folksy, whimsical Llangollen (also home to the Eisteddford). And of course the North East (Flintshire, Wrexham, Mold et al) of the country – my childhood home!

I also have Scotch, Irish, English, French, German, Norwegian and Cherokee with a bit of sub-Saharan African way back. My aunt has been doing the family heritage research lately.

ha, almost everyone i meet jokes about how i must have welsh heritage since i’m a jones! (as far as i know, i don’t though.) but i’d really love to visit wales! i even studied a bit of its history a few years back:-) xx

I don’t think I properly realised that you have welsh heritage! I’m half welsh and my Grandpa still lives in Abergavenny. I haven’t explored many other parts of the country, but I love it there. That must have some influence on how musical you are! The welsh dragon is probably my favourite animal of all time. I also have a daffodil hat that I wear to the occasional rugby match. I’ll have to show you!
