All I Want For Christmas

Unfortunately my kidney infection has meant I missed out on most of my planned Christmas parties/days out, but I was able to attend my singing teachers Christmas showcase on Sunday. My singing teacher always organises these events beautifully and the concert took place at The Battersea Barge which had been beautifully decked out for Christmas. The ceilings and beams were literally festooned with fir garlands and fairy lights.

I sang two songs; All I Want For Christmas by Mariah Carey and the duet Baby, It’s Cold Outside with my good friend Justin. Justin was fantastic but I was really underprepared; due to my kidney infection I’d barely sung a note for the last week and my top register felt very thin and weak. Normally I would cancel but I was so eager to get back to feeling normal, and given that it was a fun event with mostly friends in the audience I thought I’d attempt anyway. You can listen here – all feedback appreciated!

I first fell in love with this headdress in Sheena Hollands amazing shop whilst on tour in Derby. I made friends with Sheena whilst I was there and she later messaged me about her shop moving due to a very unsupportive council and telling me she was selling off many items. I leapt at the chance to finally own this beautiful piece. Coupled with my travelling cloak we decided I looked like an elf queen. I’m also wearing my lace “cardigan” which is the oldest vintage piece I own – it’s actually a Victorian boys blouse but I wear it backwards as this little top thing. Big thank you Justin for being an amazing duet partner and taking all these photos!friends at battersea bargedressing room table at battersea bargebattersea barge decked out for christmaself queen red clock vintage headdresself queen battersea power stationCloak – charity shop, £10. Leaves

It seems every time I’m home the trees have changed colour again and I want to document it on my camera! I love this time of year when nature is in technicolour and the changing colour of the leaves are such a powerful and perennial metaphor for the passing of time.

As I was editing this post I was reminded of this set of photos featuring the same shirt and trainers. That post was from when I was last on tour in the South West with Rhum & Clay, and coincidentally I’m on tour again with them at the moment. It’s so brilliant to be able to see different parts of the country whilst in such good company! I wrote the score for the show we are performing and it is so stimulating to revisit a project I care about so much, as so often in art that’s not the case. Completing a painting, finishing a novel or recording an album all have a moment of finality where the product is finished and the time for alterations is over. Theatre is the opposite: constantly evolving and adapting to new stages and audiences, nuances and cadences never quite the same from night to night.

Polkadots & Plimsolls

This minty turquoise colour has become a favourite of mine in recent times, I don’t know if it has been a trend recently but I seem to see lots of people wearing knitted jumpers in a similar colour. The dress is from ModCloth and was brought by my auntie last time she visited. These photos were taken by the glass building in Camden, as one passer-by commented I blended in pretty well with my dress!

I’m also wearing my new plimsolls. Plimsolls (and studded boots) are my default shoe, and most of the pairs I own are about 5 years old, inherited from my grandma (and therefore a size too small) discoloured and full of holes. I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than £5 on a pair before, but this summer I decided it was time to invest in something better. That’s where these plastic plimsolls from Melissa stepped in! I purchased them for £22.99 down in Covent Garden (who are very open to haggling) and have really enjoyed having shoes that retain their colour and shape for more than a week. The red soles remind of Sonic the Hedgehog (probably my favourite game character) and being made of plastic they feel super springy as well;  very different to canvas shoes! What do you guys think of plastic shoes?

Ipanema

IMG_4263IMG_4265

I was casually walking up the road when my neighbour stopped me to tell me I looked exactly like the girls from his youth in the sixties. He’s Brazilian, and apparently all the most fashionable, daring girls wore dresses in a similar style to this one with matching sandals. “Do you know the song The Girl From Ipanema?” he asked, “you look like her today!”.
