Brighton Rock

girl seaside mod brighton vintage retro seaside beachHello from Brighton! Brighton is one of my favourite places in the UK. The colourful buildings, the quirky shops and stalls, the rich cultural history and of course the seaside! I’ve especially always loved the connection to mods in the sixties. It’s a bit day-dreamy of me but I often think I was born into the wrong decade!

Back in my teens I was really into mod style; as a curvy girl with thick dark hair I had a lot more in common with the sixties girls I read about and saw in films, than with the skinny blondes that were popular in early ’00s media. I’m still drawn to those influences – beehives have long been my go-to “stage hair” and as you know I love my white boots.

This dress was a Christmas present and one of the rare items in my wardrobe that’s not vintage or secondhand. It’s from Pop Boutique who do also sell vintage – I received two pieces by them and have been wearing them constantly! I was down in Brighton just for the weekend – my parka-wearing, scooter-riding pal is originally from there so we ran around indulging our inner mods. The two days flew by – isn’t that always the way with holidays? Here’s hoping I can get back soon to do some record-shopping or hit up a scooter rally…

Easter

Happy Easter! I’m not religious but Easter is embedded in my annual festivities thanks to the presence of Easter holidays during school. This is the first year where I’ve had every day of Easter as a day off and it has felt so bizarre. London is a lot quieter this weekend. I’ve spent my Easter weekend writing songs, reading poetry and watching Orange Is The New Black with my housemate Lizzie. It feels a bit like pretend procrastination but my housemate assures me this is just what normal people do on a day off. My Easter has been bookended by gigs; on Friday I played a gig (which ended up being a mini Kids With Crayons reunion as James was around) and tomorrow I’m playing at the National Maritime Museum with WOLF PACK.

So my last post where I had a breakdown over blogging was one of the least commented posts ever; I’m not sure if you were waiting to see what happens next or if you were all just being very British (haha). I’ve decided to keep writing this blog for now, but I’ll share more of the things that interest me and what I’m actually doing, rather than what I’m wearing. Clothes does not this lady make! This will probably mean posts are centred more on my creative process and less on blouses. Not to say I don’t love a good blouse (how great is my newest high-neck one above?) and they won’t make an appearance now and then but I’m just not so sure it’s the peak of all my furious appetite. Hopefully you’ll find my songs almost as riveting as my choice in pinafores. Much love, and thank you for reading. X

Ipanema

IMG_4263IMG_4265

I was casually walking up the road when my neighbour stopped me to tell me I looked exactly like the girls from his youth in the sixties. He’s Brazilian, and apparently all the most fashionable, daring girls wore dresses in a similar style to this one with matching sandals. “Do you know the song The Girl From Ipanema?” he asked, “you look like her today!”.
