A few weeks back I went to the British Museum on yet another date with CB (whose bored yet?). My friends were teasing me as large museums are about as “standard date” as it gets for us; I may as well have suggested we meet at Pizza Express in 2001. However, when I saw my Uncle a few weeks later he said that’s about the coolest date he could think of, so I guess it’s a matter of perspective.

The British Museum is essentially just a collection of stuff the Brits have stolen, and I’ve always found it one of the least welcoming London museums: few maps; very basic signage; the occasionally harassed looking member of staff, most of whom seem very unhappy to be there. It probably doesn’t help that Britain’s murky colonial history looms around every corner. Even on a practical level all the stone in the building mean it’s cold temperature wise (probably what’s upsetting the staff).

Niggles aside, it’s at least one of those places where there’s something for everybody because the collections are just so diverse; I’m a magpie for the gold and jewels and CB spent quite a long time looking at the taxidermy and natural history collections too. I was also trying out my new lens and for some reason a lot of the photos are SUPER-grainy :(. Any photographer readers got any ideas as to why? If you’ve been to the British Museum I’d love to know if your thoughts were similar to mine!

i think i’ve only been to the british museum once and that was 10 years ago.. but at least back then i loved it! i need to go back, though. i agree that the collections of stolen artifacts give a bit of a damper on the mood there, but historically all the stuff is still really cool and interesting to learn about. xx

I just went there yesterday! You’re right, most of the staff look pretty grumpy and the rooms with the beige floor tiles aren’t the most beautiful either… But still, it’s a great museum going by the variety of displays. I absolutely loved the Enlightenment Gallery, the African exhibition and the court!

I love this museum! I had to laugh, a bunch of things Brits have stolen, but well, how could people see all these stuff in one place? Who can go to Easter Island and to Egypt and to this and that place to see all the things? Some can, but a few, so I think it’s brilliantly presented and a great place for a date! The staff is unhappy because they have to share information with so many people and probably they are fed up explaining the same things all the time “this? Room X. That? Room Y” :) But it shouldn’t be an excuse. Loooved the pictures! You are always the cutest!

Your photos look grand! Think I went to the British Museum as a child, years ago. I think they had some Mexican day of the dead sort of exhibition going on back then. It was a long, long time ago!

The graininess in the photos might be due to a high ISO level. Usually I set mine at around 400. You usually have to set it higher when you’re in low light conditions, and if you’re using a camera with an auto mode, they tend to raise the ISO level to compensate for bad light.

Your photos are nice. What lens did you get?
The grainny thing is cuz your ISO is high, normally over 640 starts to show “noise” in the photos, but that would be ok if you are inside a museum where the light isn’t that good and if you use less aperture (1/10 for example if the lens is over that) your photos can get blury.

I like the photo of the Moai, I wonder if was a donation from my country to them, I hope not stolen hahaha.

About a date in the Museum, dunno what to say, I wonder how did it go. I guess is about taste if you share similar taste you both might have the best date ever but if not… But in the other hand if one is not interested can get an interest learning new stuff … who knows… humans are so weird like :)
